Biography
**Michael Carlyle Hall** (born February 1, 1971) is an American actor, producer, and musician celebrated for his compelling portrayals of complex antiheroes. Raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, he earned his MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts before making his mark on the New York stage in Shakespeare in the Park and as the Emcee in the 1999 Broadway revival of *Cabaret*. He broke into television with widespread critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination as David Fisher, a closeted mortician navigating grief and family duty, in HBO's landmark drama *Six Feet Under* (2001 to 2005). He achieved global stardom headlining Showtime's *Dexter* (2006 to 2013) as forensic blood-spatter analyst and vigilante serial killer Dexter Morgan, winning both a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award alongside six consecutive Emmy nominations. Hall subsequently expanded the franchise across three major continuations: the limited sequel *Dexter: New Blood* (2021), the prequel *Dexter: Original Sin* (2024) as the narrator of Dexter's inner monologue, and the direct follow-up series *Dexter: Resurrection* (2025). Beyond his signature television roles, Hall has starred in diverse screen projects including *Gamer* (2009), *Kill Your Darlings* (2013), the neo-noir thriller *Cold in July* (2014), the biographical drama *Christine* (2016), and the Harlan Coben Netflix miniseries *Safe* (2018). An accomplished stage performer and vocalist, he has headlined Broadway runs in *Chicago*, *The Realistic Joneses*, and *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, starred in David Bowie's Off-Broadway musical *Lazarus* (2015), and actively records and tours internationally as the frontman of the indie synth-rock trio Princess Goes.
