Privacy
The Movies Box website does not use analytics or ads. Movie and TV data comes from TMDB; streaming availability comes from JustWatch via TMDB.
To protect accounts from automated abuse, the site loads Google reCAPTCHA, which collects information about your browser and how you use the site and sends it to Google. The Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
Support messages
If you send a message from the Support page, we keep your name, email address and message, in Google Firebase and in our support mailbox. We use them only to answer you.
Accounts
An account is optional. If you create one, we store your name, email address and profile picture (from Google or Facebook, if you sign in with them) using Google Firebase, plus the library you build: your watchlist, watched movies and episodes, rewatches, watch dates, notes, lists, favorite people and ratings. Your library, notes and individual ratings are private; other people only see the average rating of a title. Your browser keeps you signed in with Firebase storage on this site. We use this data only to run your account and never sell it.
Comments
Our moderators read each new or edited comment before it appears. Once approved, comments are public: anyone can read them, together with your display name and profile picture. You can edit or delete your comments at any time. Comments reported by several people are hidden automatically, and our moderators may reject or remove comments that are spam or abusive. When you report a comment, only moderators see your report.
Deleting your data: sign in, open Account and choose “Delete account”. This removes your profile, library, ratings, comments and login immediately. You can also email us from the address on your account and we'll delete it within 30 days.
Shared lists are created in the Movies Box iOS app. Anyone with a list's link can see its name, its movies and the nicknames of the people who added them.
Cookies and storage
The site uses no advertising or tracking cookies. It only stores what it needs to work and the settings you choose, in your own browser:
- Your country for streaming services. By default the site takes it from your browser's language and doesn't store it. If you pick a country, it's saved for one year in a cookie named mb_region.
- Sign-in. If you sign in, Firebase keeps you signed in using your browser's storage on this site. Signing out removes it.
- Your preferences. Library sort order, the year you chose in "Best Movies of", whether you closed the install or notification prompts, and, if you turn on notifications, this device's notification registration.
- Short-term data. For example, so a comment you just posted or deleted doesn't seem to disappear when you reload. It's cleared when you close the tab.
- Offline page. A small page and icon, so the site can show a message when you have no connection. Pages with your data are never saved.
- Trailers. They play from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com) and load only when you press play. YouTube may then store data under the Google Privacy Policy.
None of this is used to track you. You can clear it at any time in your browser settings; you'll be signed out and your preferences will reset.
